Shabbat Night Live: Gospel Shabbat

January 21 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Gospel Shabbat with Joshua Nelson

The Alan J. Malinger Rock Shabbat Fund, established by Dennis and Phyllis Malinger, in loving memory of their brother, and father of Rabbi Laurence Malinger, presents an inspiring line up for Friday evening Shabbat services over the course of the year that will raise the roof, open our hearts and fill our world with song! These Shabbat services are free and open to the public.

The Prince of Kosher Gospel comes to Aberdeen to lead inspiring, high-energy, captivating services! Joshua brings his extraordinary message of hope, unity and spirituality through kosher gospel, a marriage of Jewish religious lyrics and meanings with the soulful sounds of American gospel music.

For Joshua Nelson, kosher gospel is a way to claim both parts of his identity as a Black Jew. Kosher gospel has been able to retain the same musical cultures of Black African Muslims and Jews with that soul-inflected vocalizations which filled the Black Hebrew synagogue Joshua attended as a child with his family, observant Jews who traced their lineage back to Senegal.

Nelson has performed around the world, for Presidents, congregations, major music festivals— and for Oprah, who named him a “Next Big Thing.” He has sung with stars from Aretha Franklin to the Klezmatics, and served as the subject of the acclaimed documentary film Keep on Walking. Whatever the venue, Joshua Nelson, the Prince of Kosher Gospel, brings people — and cultures — together in joyous song.
